In 1979, after graduating from the University of Vermont's Physical Therapy program, I moved to Maine and helped to establish the first private Physical Therapy Practice in Portland, specializing in orthopedic and sports injuries and working with local high schools to establish their own athletic training programs.

Early in my practice I became aware of the limitations of a traditional exercise-based physical therapy for patients with more complicated longer term problems. To be able to help these patients, I began to broaden the scope of my practice through advanced training in hands on manual therapy and mobilization techniquest and then expanded into the holistic philosophy of Integrative Manual Therapy.

This approach to evaluation and treatment utilizes a subtle, hands on process that are structure specific and also engage the body's own self-corrective mechanisms. Instead of focusing on only the musculoskeletal system in one area of the body, the Integrative Manual Therapy philosophy assesses the whole body as well as the area of symptoms to find the underlying cause of pain and disability. This unique approach also combines the concepts and treatment philosophies of other natural healing professions as well as functional medicine and exercise that will support the patient's own healing process.
